The response of the building to the steep hillside of the wooded site and the adjacent exposed ledge bluff it is built into is reflected in the dialogue of textures and in the contrast between natural, local "site familiar" materials and industrial or "finished" surfaces and objects.
This residence employs juxtapositions of simple, contemporary architectural forms and clean, direct detailing to create a rhythmic interplay of massing and material textures. Vertical white cedar siding, large areas of glass, sandblasted stainless steel railings, overhang brackets and steel columns of industrial adaptation with exposed connections; thick, hand-split red cedar shakes, rough-face bluestone paving and natural landscape retaining boulders are some of the materials and finishes employed.
